My discussion with Unnikrishnan T Menon
Gave a fresh perspective on EV drivetrains.
They are developing IVRD
(Intelligent Variable Ratio Drive)
A dual-motor drivetrain for three-wheelers.
Both motors are mounted at the rear.
With intelligent power delivery.
This is exactly why I said in my earlier post
That systems engineering is one of the most
Critical aspects of product development.
Why use two traction motors?
One motor delivers 5 kW.
Another motor delivers 1.5 kW.
What I found interesting about the IVRD concept is
Higher launch torque without a larger motor.
Two motors share torque intelligently.
Better efficiency across different speeds.
Smooth shift from acceleration to cruising.
Both motors operate in Four-quadrant operation,
Allowing Motoring and regenerative modes.
Smaller motor can generate power at speed.
Better energy recovery during driving.
Reduced load on the main traction motor.
Compact design for easy vehicle integration.
Scalable for different vehicle segments.
Suitable for EVs and hybrid drivetrains.
I felt this is an interesting approach.
Improves overall drivetrain efficiency.
Optimizes power based on road conditions.
A fresh approach to electric powertrain design.
IVRD currently targets retrofit applications.
The concept also fits hybrid vehicles.
OEM partnerships are also possible.
