I never cared to the different sounds inside ICE vehicles. But now I realize in EV's silence is exposing everything.

I find EV noise engineering
surprisingly fascinating.
When engine noise disappears,
suddenly every small sound becomes noticeable.
✨ Motor whine.
✨ Gear noise.
✨ Road noise.
✨ Wind noise.
This is exactly why NVH engineering in
EVs is becoming far more challenging
Than many expected.
In ICE vehicles, engine noise masks
many smaller sounds. But in EVs,
Silence exposes everything.
Ironically, making a vehicle feel “silent”
Requires extremely complex engineering.
Even small gear meshing frequencies or
high-frequency Inverter switching noises
are more sensitive to human ears.
Motor slot-pole combinations and
Electromagnetic harmonics directly
Influence EV acoustic behavior.
The quieter the EV becomes,
The more sensitive customers
Become to tiny noises and vibrations.
Future EV differentiation may depend
Not only on range, but also on
refinement and cabin acoustics.
Contrary to this, EVs are now being equipped with
Artificial sound systems to improve pedestrian safety.
🎯 Which EV noise is hardest to control:
motor whine, gear noise, or road noise?
🎯 How can the EV industry balance
"Cabin Silence" with "pedestrian safety"?
